Research in progress
• “Tamam” project: to develop a model for the development of the school
The study presents the project “Tamam” as a new attempt in the Arab world for the development, combining between research and development, in order to launch initiatives for school-based reform and support the same.
• “The impact of the procedural collaborative research on skills, habits of mind, and attitudes towards procedural research and cooperation: the status of a project based on Arabic schools”
This study examines the impact of the participation of “Tamam” project schools teams work in their collaborative experiences in the procedural research about specific elements of the mental habits, especially those related to the conduct of researches and thinking assessment, as well as decisions based on research results and trends towards the procedural research and cooperation.
• “ Building capacities for the school-based reform in the Arab world: challenges and learned lessons”
This study examines the process of designing and implementing professional development program, used in “Tamam” project, through the analysis of the challenges facing the program in the implementation phase and how they were addressed.
Project activities
A number of workshops for schools participating in the project have been implemented as follows:
• Workshops for private schools, members in the project
The first workshop: “Procedural research to improve school performance”
The workshop was held from June 29th to July 3rd, 2007, in the Baccalaureate School - Oman. During the workshop, presentations and explanations were submitted on “Tamam” project and procedural research, with the participation of schools, universities, Ministries of Education of Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.
The second workshop: “Research tools and data analysis”
The workshop was held at the American University of Beirut from 19th to 20th January 2008. Participating schools exchanged their experiences in the procedural research, and the participants were trained on the development of tools for data collection and their analysis methodology.
The third workshop: “Research data analysis and interpretation”
The third workshop was held at the American University of Beirut from 25th to 27th July 2008. Participants shared experiences on the analysis and interpretation of data and the preparation of reports on research data. In addition, the teams have provided projects that were implemented.
The fourth workshop: “From Research to Implementation”
This workshop was held at the American University of Beirut from 23rd to 25th January 2009. Schools participating in the workshop provided implemented procedural research projects, and there was a discussion about the ways to develop the activities of “Tamam” in the schools. Furthermore, explanations were provided on the thinking practices at the individual, school and organizational development.
The fifth workshop: “Transition to development at the school level”
It was held at the American University of Beirut from 1st to 3rd July, 2009. The participants discussed the views of the American University teams over the first two years of the project and shared their assessment of their works in it. The schools have been asked to start a work plan at the school level. They also discussed possible ways to continue the work on the project in the future.
The sixth workshop: “development leadership in the school”
The workshop was held at the American University of Beirut from 26th to 28th February 2010. The participants worked in the first two days on reviewing the attempts of the project teams for reform and reflecting the same. On the third day, the American University team carried out the review of activities achieved since the beginning of the project, and the participants and the university team started to study and reflect on them and draw lessons from them.
• Workshops for public schools, members in the project:
The first workshop: “Presenting “Tamam” project
The first workshop was held on April 14th, 2009, at the American University of Beirut, during which they provide interpretations for the educational development project addressed to the schools in the Arab countries, and for the procedural research. The participants were also trained on how to choose a theme aiming to school reforms.
The second workshop: “Procedural Research Cycle”
The second workshop was held on January 16th, 2010, at the American University of Beirut; during which they present and define the procedural research that will be used as a mean for development in schools, as well as its interpretation.
The third workshop: “Methods of data collection: interviews and questionnaires of the focus group”
It was held on March 20th, 2010, at the American University of Beirut. They explained two methods of data collection: interviews and questionnaires of the focus group. In addition, the team work of the schools exchanged the thinking about the procedural research studies, carried out by them, with the group of the university and the teams of other schools. They also discussed the potential uses of interviews in the school projects and thought about the type of data that will be extracted using this method.
The fourth workshop: Methods of data collection: “Classroom Observations”
It was held on April 24th, 2010, at the American University of Beirut; during which they define another way to collect data: the classroom observations. The participants also recognized the various tools for data collection through the classroom observations.
The fifth workshop: “Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data”
The workshop was held on July 7th and 8th, 2010, at the American University of Beirut. They define the ways of quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data.
